Skin Cancer Reconstruction

With more than 500,000 cases diagnosed in the United States annually, skin cancer has become an alarmingly common form of cancer. If left untreated, skin cancer can prove deadly, and the longer the condition goes undiagnosed and untreated, the more potentially disfiguring it can become. Often, a plastic surgeon who is experienced in skin cancer reconstruction can provide superior skin cancer treatment, because he or she can minimize the severity of disfiguring scars.

At East Islip Surgical in Long Island, New York, Dr. Bieniewicz offers advanced skin cancer reconstruction. Whether an individual is seeking treatment for skin cancer or has had the cancer removed by another physician and is interested in addressing the scars that resulted from the procedure, Dr. Bieniewicz has the skills and experience necessary to ensure a positive outcome. Because skin cancer can take multiple forms and can occur in various places on the body, skin cancer reconstruction is a highly customized procedure. Dr. Bieniewicz tailors the treatment to each individual patient according to his or her specific needs.

Scar Revision

Over time, scars resulting from accidents or surgical procedures can fade considerably. When a scar remains prominent after a year or more, however, individuals may consider using cosmetic surgery to diminish the scar's conspicuousness. Although a scar can never be eliminated completely, Dr. Bieniewicz is experienced in a number of scar revision techniques. Patients who visit our Long Island, New York, plastic surgery practice are often amazed at Dr. Bieniewicz's ability to improve the appearance of their scars drastically.

Like skin cancer reconstruction, scar revision is a highly customized procedure. When topical treatments fail to produce the desired results, surgical means may be warranted. Surgical methods may include one or more of the following:

Excision involves the removal of excess scar tissue to create a thinner, less noticeable scar.

Skin grafts can be used in more extensive scar revisions. During the skin grafting procedure, skin from an inconspicuous area of the body is relocated to cover the problem area.

Relocation of a scar so that it follows the natural lines or creases of the face or body may camouflage a scar's existence.  A scar near the nose, for instance, may be relocated to the crease of the nostril, using the natural contour of the nose to disguise the scar.

Often, scar revision yields the most favorable results when performed at least a year after the initial wound has had a chance to heal and the scar to fully develop.

Benign Skin Lesion Removal

Moles, cysts, warts, and skin tags can be removed quickly and safely at our plastic surgery practice in the New York area. Whereas, during skin cancer reconstruction, the correction of damage that results from the removal of an aggressive cancerous lesion can be complicated, removing benign skin lesions (those that are non-cancerous) often requires far less invasive means. For instance, many warts can be frozen off with liquid nitrogen gas, and the removal of skin tags may only require the use of surgical scissors. Methods may vary according to individual patients' needs, and all options will be discussed during your initial consultation with Dr. Bieniewicz.
