Post-bariatric Surgery in Long Island – Body and Arm Lift Surgery

Dramatic weight loss, whether resulting from diet or bariatric surgery, can significantly improve an individual's life. Unfortunately, however, it can also leave him or her with excess skin. Often, this excess skin can not only be frustrating, but also cause a person to develop rashes and other skin irritations beneath the overhanging skin. To ease discomfort and to complete an individual's hard-won transformation, Dr. Edward John Bieniewicz offers post-bariatric procedures at our plastic surgery practice in East Islip, Long Island, including arm, butt, and thigh lift surgery.

Often, these procedures can be combined with a tummy tuck or a breast lift at our Long Island practice during a complete body lift surgery. Individuals who have lost skin elasticity due to the natural aging process or multiple pregnancies may also be suitable candidates for these rejuvenating treatments.

Body Lift

Individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight and now have sagging skin in the regions of the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks may be suitable candidates for a total body lift. At East Islip Surgical in Long Island, all potential body lift surgery candidates are evaluated by Dr. Bieniewicz. In order to be a good candidate for the procedure, any patient who has undergone weight loss surgery or who has lost weight by other methods is advised to maintain a stable body weight for three months to a year before choosing to proceed with body lift surgery.

The body lift procedure is actually a combination of a number of different body contouring procedures:

  • Arm lift surgery addresses loose skin of the upper arms.
  • A tummy tuck tightens the abdominal muscles and removes excess skin from around the waist.
  • A thigh lift removes excess skin and re-contours the upper thigh.
  • A butt lift shapes the buttocks, restoring a smooth, rounded contour.
  • A breast lift can often be helpful for women whose breasts have flattened and drooped after weight loss.

Since a complete body lift may involve numerous individual procedures, the treatments are often broken up into upper, mid, and lower body lifts, each of which is performed separately. A recovery period of a few weeks usually is necessary after each step. Because it can yield such spectacular results, though, a body lift is often well worth the time a patient invests.

Arm Lift

At our plastic surgery practice in Long Island, Dr. Bieniewicz offers arm lift surgery, also known as brachioplasty, for individuals who, because of significant weight loss, pregnancy, or aging, have loose skin on their upper arms. For post-bariatric patients, an arm lift may be combined with other plastic surgery procedures, including a breast lift, tummy tuck, thigh lift, butt lift, or complete body lift.

Dr. Bieniewicz usually begins the arm lift procedure by making an incision along the arm, the length of which is determined by the amount of skin that needs to be removed. The doctor then shapes the upper arm by removing excess skin. If the patient is bothered by isolated fat deposits in addition to surplus skin, liposuction may be incorporated into the arm lift procedure.

After arm lift surgery, the area is bandaged and the patient is given prescription pain medication to manage any discomfort that may result. Patients may experience bruising and swelling as a result of the surgery. The area may be wrapped with an elastic bandage or a compression garment to reduce the swelling and aid in the healing process. Although healing time does vary from patient to patient, patients are usually able to return to work in less than a week.

Thigh Lift

A thigh lift targets upper thighs that have become unshapely due to the excess skin that can result from losing a considerable amount of weight. Those who still have fat deposits concentrated in the upper thigh are often better served with liposuction.

The thigh lift procedure can be tailored to address specific areas of the upper thigh. There are three main forms of the surgery:

During an inner thigh lift, the doctor makes an incision along the natural crease that separates the thigh from the pubic area. Excess skin is removed to create a smoother contour.

A bilateral thigh lift is designed to re-contour both the right and the left side of the thigh. Often, the incisions are made at the very top of the thigh, where they are easily concealed.

A medial thigh lift may be appropriate when a patient would like to target the upper portion of the inner thigh. During this procedure, the doctor creates an incision along the top of the inner thigh and beneath the buttock.

A thigh lift – inner, bilateral, or medial – is often combined with other procedures at our plastic surgery practice in Long Island. Body or arm lift surgery performed in conjunction with a thigh lift can often produce the most dramatic makeovers.

Butt Lift

To improve the appearance of the buttock region, which can appear droopy after significant weight loss, Dr. Bieniewicz performs butt lift surgery at our practice in Long Island. A butt lift shapes the buttocks, making them appear rounder and perkier. The butt lift procedure is often performed in conjunction with a thigh lift for optimal rejuvenation of the lower body.

During the butt lift procedure, the location in which the doctor makes the incision depends on the amount of excess skin to be removed, the shape of the patient's body, and the aesthetic results that the patient wishes to achieve. Often, a patient desires a firmer, rounder bottom, in which case butt implants or the patient's own fat may be used to shape the behind.
