The details of the breast reduction procedure depend on the individual patient, specifically on her physical needs and her aesthetic desires. Usually, however, Dr. Bieniewicz begins the surgery by making an incision around the nipple, along the lower crease of the breast, and vertically in between. This anchor-shaped incision allows the surgeon to remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin so as to create a breast shape that is more proportionate to the patient's body. The doctor may also reposition the nipple to suit the patient's new breast shape. After sculpting each breast, the surgeon closes the incisions and carefully bandages the area.
After breast reduction surgery, patients may experience discomfort, bruising, and swelling. In addition to pain medication, a soft, supportive, surgical bra is often given to patients to wear during the healing process.
