Undergoing a mastectomy can save a woman's life, but it can also make her feel physically diminished and cause her to develop body image issues and lower self-esteem. At East Islip Surgical, we believe that every woman has the right to feel beautiful and feminine. For this reason, Dr. Edward John Bieniewicz applies his extensive medical expertise and artistic talent to natural-looking breast reconstruction at our practice in Suffolk County, Long Island.
Whenever a new mastectomy patient comes to see us, Dr. Bieniewicz conducts a thorough breast reconstruction consultation at our Suffolk County, Long Island, plastic surgery practice. During the consultation, he listens carefully as the woman explains her aesthetic goals. Based on these, her physical needs, and the nature of her mastectomy surgery, Dr. Bieniewicz develops a personalized plan for restoring her bust line and her confidence. As part of this plan, he and the patient will choose which of the two main types of breast reconstruction surgery to use:
Implant-based breast reconstruction involves the use of a tissue expander. Placed under the skin and chest muscle after mastectomy surgery, the balloon expander is gradually enlarged over time to create space for either a saline or a silicone breast implant.
In tram flap breast reconstruction, Dr. Bieniewicz relocates fat and skin from the abdomen to the chest. Using the relocated tissue, he creates a natural-looking breast mound. This technique is particularly appropriate for women who have excess fat and loose skin around the abdomen.
After breast reconstruction, women may experience discomfort in the chest area. If the tram flap technique was used, they may also have pain and bruising in the abdominal region. These effects are temporary, and any discomfort may be managed using a prescription pain reliever. Although breast reconstruction can restore the appearance of the breasts, normal sensation may never completely return to the area.
Breast reconstruction performed at our Suffolk County, Long Island, plastic surgery practice can significantly improve a woman's self-esteem after she has undergone mastectomy surgery. To learn more about breast reconstruction, please contact Dr. Edward John Bieniewicz today.
