Breast augmentation surgery can seem quite complex given all of the options for implant placement and the potential risks and benefits involved. Below we have answered a number of the most frequently asked questions about breast augmentation.

What types of implants are available for a breast augmentation?

There are two types of breast implants available for a breast augmentation surgery; saline and silicone. Contrary to popular belief, advancements made in silicone breast implant construction have made them very safe for use. However, if you have never had breast implants before you will have to go through a pre-screening process to determine if you qualify for receiving a silicone implant.

How severe is swelling after a breast augmentation?

You can expect significant swelling to occur after a breast enlargement surgery. In some cases, the swelling may migrate from the breasts down towards the abdominal area as fluid drains away from the breast. Your cosmetic surgeon will instruct you how to treat this swelling after surgery to help reduce pain and speed healing. Typically, swelling after a breast augmentation surgery can last from a few days to a few weeks depending on the individual.

How long does it take for my breast implants to settle?

It can take a few months for breast implants to settle after your surgery. Generally, you can expect your implants to settle in about two to three months. At that time, you will be able to see how your breasts will really look after implantation, however, it is not uncommon for some slight settling to still occur for the first year.

Will my breast augmentation surgery last forever?

Unfortunately, breast implants that are used in breast augmentation surgery do not have a lifetime guarantee. According to the Institute of Medicine, the average breast implant life expectancy is around 16 years, though it is not unheard of for women to have implants last 20 years or more. Likewise, it is also not unheard of for a woman to require a second breast augmentation surgery within the first 10 years of having implants to replace a damaged implant.
